Treatment Centers

Anyone who is serious about kicking a drug or alcohol habit has a great deal of help waiting for them if they choose to ask for it. Treatment centers abound that specialize in treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. Picking the right one is a matter of going armed with some basic knowledge and a list of questions to ask before committing yourself or your loved one to treatment.

What constitutes a viable drug treatment program? What is the difference between a detox center and a drug rehabilitation center? Are all programs for drug treatment about the same? Why should I choose Program A over Program B?

First, ask if Program A specifically addresses the drug problem you need help with. Treating marijuana addiction is not the same as treating meth addiction. An alcoholic has special and specific medical problems an Ambien addict may not. Does the treatment center staff specialize in a particular drug or class of drugs, or does their program promise to address anyone’s problem, no matter what it may be? The one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work any better for treating drug abuse than it does for shoes.

Is Program B focused on a holistic approach to the problem, or is it geared toward simply getting the addict “clean” of whatever substance he or she is abusing? Detox alone is not enough to cure a drug habit. In fact, there is a strong argument to be made that no addiction can be “cured,” only controlled. Programs that do not address long-term maintenance and follow-up are likely doomed to fail.

What constitutes a holistic approach to drug treatment? A treatment center that offers such an approach is distinguished by a wide range of services. These include intervention counselors to help convince abusers to seek help; detoxification and management of withdrawal symptoms; counseling for coping with cravings; and behavioral modification therapy to help overcome whatever environmental triggers tempt a recovering addict to relapse. Teaching nutrition and proper exercise is often a part of a holistic program as well, to restore a body ravaged by years of drug or alcohol abuse.

Treatment centers for drug and alcohol abuse offer many different methodologies for treating substance abuse. A residential treatment center is a living center for people recovering from drug addiction or alcoholism, where residents are allowed to regain their perspective on a “normal” life and begin to learn how to live free of the drug. It is a nurturing environment designed to give recovering abusers the strength to stay away from the drug forever.

Inpatient programs remove the addict from the drug environment as well, at least in the short term, creating a safe place where the substance abuser cannot obtain what he craves and where he can learn to deal with the craving. Outpatient care is also part of most drug treatment center programs, with intensive focus on counseling, reintegration of the addict into his or her social network, and reconnecting abusers and families.

Every drug treatment center should offer programs tailored to the individual. If they do not, steer clear.
