Kansas Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center
Kansas has changed a bit since Dorothy and Toto tried so hard to get back there from the land of Oz. Even in the vast farm country of the Kansas plains, drugs of all types are readily available. Some of those fields are devoted to growing marijuana, and Kansas City’s giant rail hub connects to every part of the United States, making it a major clearing house for drug smugglers.
While Kansas used to have some of the strictest marijuana possession laws in the country, recent legislation has recognized that low-level drug habits are more effectively eliminated by treatment than by incarceration. Minor drug offenders now receive 18 months of drug rehabilitation instead of jail. The state uses money seized from drug operations to build and operate drug treatment centers across Kansas. This approach to dealing with non-violent drug offenders saves enormous sums of taxpayer dollars and makes available to the citizens of Kansas a network of public programs for the prevention and treatment of drug abuse.
The availability of treatment centers in Kansas is quite broad. Most larger communities have at least one, but evaluate any rehab center carefully. Drug treatment should not be a “best-guess”; visit the facility, talk to the staff, ask for a tour, and then seek out neutral third-party opinions about the treatment center and its programs before committing a lot of time and money. Not all programs are the same; not all rehab centers have the same level of experience, especially with so many new drugs cropping up, with different effects.
Help for drug addiction or alcohol abuse, in Kansas as in most other states, runs the gamut from drug or alcohol detox to counseling and rehabilitation services, to programs such as residential treatment centers that help the recovering addict transition from the drug lifestyle to one focused on more normal pursuits. The 18-month treatment program mandated by the courts is more than simple detoxification to get the addict “clean.” It involves a long course of counseling and behavior modification therapy to permanently break the addict’s craving for drugs and to identify and overcome the triggers that tempt the addict to relapse. If you are evaluating programs, ensure that the rehab center uses this same approach.

Also check into whether the alcohol recovery program or drug treatment center offers family outreach programs. It does an addict little good to clean up his life only to discover that his family will not take him back. Healing involves remedying the damage done to relationships and social networks as well as to the addict’s mind and body, so rehabilitation programs and treatment centers focused on the “whole family” approach to “sober for life” have a far better chance of success than those that do not.
