Illinois Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center
Chicago, the storied center of mob activity since the 1930s, graduated from speakeasies and alcohol runners to heroin, cocaine, and every other form of drug smuggling long ago. It is a major hub for transshipment of illegal drugs of every type, which means, of course, that drug abuse is also a major problem in Illinois. As in every other state in the Union, methamphetamine use is on a steep upward curve, with meth labs proliferating statewide. The low cost and easy availability of meth make it a major hazard to high school and college age students. Parents of young people should educate themselves on the prevalence of meth and other drugs within their communities as well as on the warning signs of meth addiction and other forms of drug abuse.
One way to do that is to seek out local centers for treatment of drug abuse and alcohol recovery. Many have outreach programs intended to educate the community; others offer intervention services if you have a loved one who refuses to acknowledge his or her problem. Illinois is aggressive in handling drug-related offenses, but its 15 drug courts are not designed as “treatment instead of incarceration” sorting centers. Most drug offenders end up in jail, so Illinois families need to be proactive in seeking help for drug abuse problems or alcoholism.
A qualified drug treatment center, or an alcohol recovery center, will be staffed with trained professionals experienced in the type of drug problem for which you are seeking help. It should tailor its programs to individuals, not treat them as cattle with the same disease that can be treated with the same standard cure. Be aware going in that fighting drug addiction or alcoholism is neither a short-term battle nor a simple one. It involves commitment and determination, not least on the part of the family that wants their loved one back. Seek out a treatment center that offers a whole-life approach to the problem, one that includes the family as part of both the problem and the solution.
A disproportionate number of substance abusers, at least those incarcerated in Illinois jails, are minorities. Do not assume that only the other guy can get help, however. The network of public and private programs for treating substance abuse in Illinois is widespread, and includes detox centers, church-affiliated or private living centers, halfway houses, clinics, and rehab centers. “Rehab” is not just for the likes of Lindsey Lohan; studies indicate that even hard-core abusers who seek help stand a good chance of recovery in the right program.

The “right program” for you is one that focuses on your problem and your individual needs. Any rehab center, in Illinois or anywhere else, that does not offer a “sober for life” approach that uses individual counseling, behavior modification, and a genuine commitment to finding and uprooting the underlying cause of the addiction is not for you. Simple detox is not enough. Find a drug treatment center that really understands the substance you or your loved one may be on, and go for it.
