Holistic Drug Treatment
Treatment for drug abuse should never be approached as a piecemeal process. It takes a determined, comprehensive program that addresses the addict’s physical and mental wellbeing as well as helps to alleviate the damage inflicted on the people closest to him. This rounded, holistic drug treatment methodology produces far better results than a drug rehab program that focuses on the addict alone.
Holistic drug treatment is a mind-body-spirit approach. It begins with the body, for no long-term modification of an addict’s behavior is possible while he or she is still afflicted with intense physical cravings for the drug. The first stage of any drug treatment involves detoxification. This can be conducted on an inpatient basis at a drug treatment center, or on an outpatient basis at home, but must always be carefully monitored. The approach depends upon the individual, the level of addiction, the likelihood of additional complications, and the presence of a monitor to supervise the medication.
Once all physical traces of the drug have been removed from an addict’s system, the second phase of drug withdrawal begins. Any program that purports to be holistic drug rehab must include counseling, and not just to teach the addict how to resist temptation. It must address whatever drove the person to drugs to begin with. Even the accidental addict has a real emotional dependency on the drug which must be broken before a true cure is possible.
Because most addicts are in poor physical condition, nutrition and exercise are part of any holistic drug program. Some include spas or steam baths, but all should include instruction on eating right to reverse the debilitating effects of drug abuse. Healthy as well as “clean” should be the goal.
Behavioral modification is a large part of any successful drug treatment program. Unless the addict learns how to recognize what triggers a craving and how to resist the behavior that leads straight to the nearest drug dealer, there is little chance that he or she can truly prevent a return to the self-destructive patterns of the past. Perhaps the party girl just can’t say no to a drink or “a little weed.” Perhaps work stress triggers a desire for escape into the euphoric nowhere-land of the drug. A holistic drug treatment program teaches the addict to recognize and cope with the things that formerly drove the drug habit.

Last, but certainly not least, a holistic drug program recognizes the other people who were dragged into the midst of the addict’s drug problem. Spouses, children, friends, co-workers, parents—anyone close to an addict is likely to catch some of the fallout in the form of financial or emotional stress, shattered relationships, overturned careers. Putting all that back together is tough, but it can and has been done for thousands of people. The “whole family” approach is just another step to the goal of “clean for life” that any holistic drug treatment center worth the name uses to put an addict’s life back together. Taken altogether, the holistic drug treatment approach picks up all the pieces, and creates a whole new life.
