Holisitc Drug Rehab
Drug rehabilitation cannot succeed without a focused, comprehensive approach to the problem. Trying to address a drug problem by addressing only detoxification, or only counseling, or only the addict, is like trying to put together a puzzle with only half the pieces. You might be able to tell what the finished result should look like, but it will never actually be complete.
Holistic drug rehabilitation encompasses all aspects of the addict’s person, lifestyle and circumstances. It attempts to break the hold of the drug over the addict by removing the craving for it, by instilling barriers against a return to the drug-driven lifestyle, and by reintegrating the addict into the family and society he or she left behind.
First, any comprehensive, or holistic, drug rehab program must remove the physical influence of the drug. The best way, of course, is to remove the addict from any environment that enables his or her drug use. This may require intervention on the part of friends, family, or a neutral third party such a trained professional from a drug treatment center to force the addict to own up to his or her problem. Getting the person off the street or away from drug-addicted “friends” to a treatment facility for drug abuse not only changes the addict’s physical environment, it puts her in the midst of people trained to recognize and treat the physical and emotional symptoms associated with drug addiction.
Detoxification—removal of all traces of the drug from the addict’s system—is followed, in a holistic drug treatment program, by restoring the addict to good physical and mental health. A focus on good nutrition and exercise goes hand-in-hand with treating any physical damage to the body, a common side effect of prolonged drug use. Counseling to help the patient understand why he or she became addicted is equally important. Without that basic acknowledgement of problems above and beyond the dependence on drugs, the addict is extremely likely to return to the same patterns of self-destructive behavior (witness all the celebrities who have made multiple trips to “rehab”). A holistic drug rehab program aggressively seeks to alter the patient’s attitude toward drugs and to root out the underlying emotional problems driving it.

A holistic approach to drug rehab understands that few people get through life completely alone. Drug abuse inflicts terrible suffering on family and friends who are caught into the addict’s problem. Putting lives and families back together should be a major goal of any drug treatment program, but it is touted especially by those that claim to offer holistic drug rehabilitation. The “whole family” approach tries to heal the breaches made in relationships by drug abuse, to bring families back together, to rebuild shattered lives. Understanding that the addict is not alone in his problem makes for a much greater chance at helping the addict reintegrate into normal society and become “whole” again.
The holistic approach to drug rehab is highly recommended over any program that focuses solely on removing the immediate craving for the drug.
