Hawaii Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center
The most laid-back state in the Union is not without its share of drug problems. With up to 12 million tourists pouring into the islands every year, drug smuggling in Hawaii is a major problem. The number one problem drug currently is crystal meth, followed by cocaine, heroin, and a variety of club drugs and prescription drugs like Hydrocone, the most widely-abused prescription drug in this state.
Hawaiian drug laws are more liberal than in many other states, including legalized use of medical marijuana, and treatment instead of incarceration for minor drug offenders. Money seized from drug operations is used to fund a widespread network of drug treatment and rehabilitation programs, so that even hard-core addicts have hope of receiving treatment for substance abuse problems of all types. However, parents and concerned family members and friends of a suspected drug abuser or alcoholic should not hesitate to seek help on their own from the many other rehab facilities and recovery centers aimed at treating alcohol abuse and drug addiction found within Hawaii’s borders.
Drug rehabilitation centers, alcohol recovery and treatment facilities, halfway houses, detox centers, outpatient clinics, residential treatment centers—there is no shortage of facilities and programs for the treatment of drug abuse and alcoholism. In Hawaii, as elsewhere, the type and level of services offered by each program vary, but the good ones focus on more than getting sober; their goal is living sober for life. Evaluating the many treatment centers for alcohol abuse and drug addiction located across Hawaii should be one of the first and most important steps in getting help for your loved one. Not all drug treatment programs are created equal. A well-rounded approach that looks to that all-important goal of living sober for life rather than just short-term detoxification should be first on your list for a closer look. Any drug treatment program that focuses only on “getting clean” is unlikely to offer the comprehensive counseling and behavior modification therapy required for staying clean.
Make sure that any program you choose offers comprehensive counseling and behavior modification therapy. Just eliminating the physical cravings does not necessary kill the psychological cravings, which can crop up months or years later. Likewise, a good program strives to break the cycle of abuse and self-destructive behavior.

A drug or alcohol treatment center that remembers the families of the addict is more likely to achieve a successful reintegration of the patient into his or her social network than one that does not offer a “whole family” approach. Rebuilding the lives shattered by the abuse problem, overcoming resentments and underlying relationship issues, must be a part of a successful recovery. In Hawaii, “family” is so very important. Don’t choose a program or center for substance abuse based solely on price, location, or what seems to be stellar success rates. Find out whether “family” is mentioned in its programs, and whether it truly offers a course of treatment tailored to the individual rather than to the clinic’s bottom line.
