Drug Rehab Program

With abuse of illegal and prescription drugs on the rise, it is not surprising that the number of rehab facilities and drug treatment programs is rising as well. Evaluating a drug treatment center or a particular rehab program can be a bewildering process to someone thrown into the middle of the battle against drugs. Go armed with some basic knowledge of what a drug rehab program should be when choosing from among the dozens of options available in most areas.

Addiction Recovery

It is a sad fact that not all drug rehab centers and not all drug treatment programs are equal. Public rehab facilities and drug programs are often under-funded and inadequately staffed to deal with the sheer number of people needing help. Private facilities can be expensive, with no guarantees that the “cure” will take. So how to choose? What constitutes a good drug rehab program with a reasonable chance for success?

Clinics with a narrow focus or those that promise a cure should be avoided at all costs; likewise those that seem to offer a patented approach to the process. There is no such thing as a cure for drug addiction that works for everyone. Any good rehab program must be individually focused, taking into account all of the factors that went into the addiction, the level of addiction, and the long-term effects. Dealing with the aftermath of a drug problem can be fully as devastating as coping with the actual craving for the drug. Any drug treatment program that does not address both mind and body is not one to trust with your own or your loved one’s care.

Choose a drug rehabilitation program for its focus on “clean for life” rather than its cost or promise of quick results. Simple detoxification, however well managed, is not enough to root out the mind’s craving for the next fix, or whatever deep-seated need was filled by the comfort found in the drug. Drug addiction is often accidental, but more often sustained by the addict’s refusal to address life problems that become meaningless when wrapped in the cozy glow of a cocaine hit. Even when the physical residue and drug toxins have been cleansed from the body, the emotional problems remain, and must be addressed. Any drug rehab program worth the name will offer a mix of physical treatment and psychological counseling.

How long does drug rehab take? As long as it takes. Everyone is different. Assuming an inpatient stay of a certain number of days is right for all addicts is like assuming one size shoe will fit everybody on the planet. Assuming that x number of visits to a drug treatment center will be enough for the “average” addict is, again, assuming that one size fits all. Addiction is different for every single person suffering from it, and how people approach their own cure will differ wildly. The only thing you should assume about drug rehab programs is that a good one addresses both how to get an addict off the drug, and how to keep him off it for life.
