Drug Intervention

One of the most basic roadblocks to any drug abuser getting help is the simple fact that many don’t want it. Even if they do, often a drug addict is too ashamed, too afraid, or too hooked to acknowledge that he has a problem, and is likely to turn away from loved ones, friends, or co-workers who try to help. For drug treatment to work, or sometimes even to begin, there must come a point where the substance abuser asks for help, or is forced to accept the need for it. This “intervention” can literally be the difference between life and death, or between a half-life consumed by drugs and a real life lived happily among people who are not fixated on their next hit.

Addiction Recovery

A drug intervention may be the last resort for a family or an employer that has tried everything else to get a drug abuser’s attention. It usually comes as a surprise to the addict, who has convinced himself either than no one cares, that he can handle it, that there is no real problem except in the minds of everyone else, or that he himself simply doesn’t care. The drug has become mother, father, wife, and lover and nothing else much matters. This is where a drug treatment professional trained in cutting through all the excuses can step in and confront the user with the truth.

Intervention for drug abuse can take many forms, but it is always stressful for all concerned and should be well thought-out and managed with the advice and participation of a professional experienced in drug treatment and intervention. An addiction center or other program for drug treatment usually has qualified individuals on staff whose function it is to confront the drug abuser and convince her to seek treatment. A drug intervention is particularly effective in the workplace, where a neutral third party can confront the individual outside the emotional fortress of the home. While it is important not to reinforce the individual’s barriers by making him feel cornered, a successful drug intervention depends on the ability to overcome, calmly and objectively, the flurry of excuses most addicts can raise in their own defense. A professional who has seen every combination of rage, guilt, tears, and denial is better equipped for this than a friend or family member.

Drug intervention should always be handled with care. It does not take kidnapping the addict, as Hollywood seems to think, to get her attention. Sometimes the family can band together and confront the individual privately, or write letters expressing their feelings about the addict’s drug habit and its effect on them. However an intervention for drug abuse occurs, it will not be deemed successful unless it results in the addict seeking help for his self-destructive behavior. The odds are much higher if a person trained in alcohol or drug intervention attempts it. Many priests and ministers have such training, and drug treatment centers and facilities with staff trained in drug treatment and drug intervention are just a phone call away. Doing so could, literally, save a life.
