Connecticut Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center
The New England Pipeline for drug smuggling to and from Canada runs right through Connecticut. This means that a state with a once low drug problem is now increasingly battling an explosion of cocaine and heroin abuse. Cocaine especially is a problem in Connecticut, arriving from New York City on its way to points north. Meth and club drugs are increasingly common, especially among thrill-seeking young people frequenting rave parties in the constant search to prove how “cool” they are. Parents should be aware of the growing risk to high school and college age children.
Connecticut has established drug courts and publicly funded drug rehabilitation programs and centers to combat this growing problem. The network of alcohol and drug treatment centers across the state is expanding. These include both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation and recovery centers run by the state of Connecticut. In addition, the state legislature is debating ways to legalize medical use of marijuana as well as how to manage methadone programs and other reforms aimed at reducing drug addiction or preventing mild drug habits from escalating into major, and expensive, drug addictions.
It is not always necessary to commute across state lines to find an alcohol or drug treatment facility; Connecticut has plenty. These range from detox centers to private hospitals and clinics, public rehab centers, halfway houses, and residential treatment centers. Likely there is one or more in your local area; finding one is a matter of going online or picking up the phone book. However, there are some questions to ask when evaluating any alcohol recovery center or facility offering treatment for drug abuse.
Does the alcohol or drug treatment program take a holistic approach to the problem? A detox center alone is usually not the answer for long-term recovery. Three key elements to any successful drug or alcohol treatment program involve detoxification, to remove all residual traces of the drug from the abuser’s system; counseling to help the addict cope with the psychological craving for the substance; and behavior modification to alter the self-destructive behavior and prevent a recurrence. If a particular program does not focus on all of these elements, look somewhere else.

In Connecticut, as elsewhere, the prevalence of the problem makes early treatment a must, as well as a focus on “sober for life.” With such easy availability of drugs, at relatively low cost, relapse into drug use can happen all too easily. Likewise, the recovering alcoholic must battle temptation against this legal and easily obtained substance. Any drug rehabilitation program should include a “whole family” approach so that friends and family members can not only sort out their own feelings about their loved one’s problem, but help in the ongoing battle to stay clean and sober for life. Choose an alcohol recovery program or drug treatment center with this philosophy of reintegrating the addict or alcoholic into society, so that sober living becomes the new habit, the new goal, and the new life.
